Nenechte si ujít vystoupení dr. Matouse na téma "Communication networks and new technologies in the developing world", které se uskuteční již v pondělí 30. dubna od 14:00 hod. v rámci pravidelného cyklu přednášek Jinonické informační pondělky v učebně 2015 areálu UK Jinonice.
Přednáška bude vedena v českém jazyce.
Communication networks and new technologies in the developing world
- In the first part of the talk, Dr.Matous will overview his research on social network capital and infrastructure development in informal urban settlements of the third world. Social capital is crucial for slum dwellers but there is a lack of consensus on how it can be measured. This presentation will describe how using the network concept, scales for social capital measurement were developed and applied in a Philippine slum and how these measures relate to squatters access to basic needs such as potable water or electricity.
- In the next part of the lecture, the introduced social capital measurement tools will be further extended to a case study of mobile phone communication and social networks among members of a mountainous tribe in south India.
- Finally, Dr.Matous will describe his current research on diffusion of technologies in Africa. His colleagues and he have been conducting annual social network surveys of hundreds of farmers in rural Ethiopia. They distributed mobile phones to half of the observed farmers and collected their geo-coded communication data. This randomized-controlled trial is expected to elucidate causal relationships between diffusion of new technologies and evolution of communication networks in the developing world.
Petr Matous, PhD, is an assistant professor in the Infrastructure Systems Group, Department of Civil Engineering, the University of Tokyo, Japan. He conducts research on technology and infrastructure management in informal urban and remote rural areas of Asia and Africa. By gathering original data, conducting social experiments, and applying state of the art methods of social network analysis, he tries to understand the reasons behind people’s unequal share of costs and benefits from new infrastructure and technology development.
